The 5 W's
The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson
Who: Lennie Walker
What: Lennie suffers the sudden loss of her sister, who doubles as her best friend. In the midst of her grief, she ping-pongs between two boys. Boy #1 is her dead sisters boyfriend. Boy #2 is the new kid in town, who everyone wants, but only wants Lennie.
When: The story takes place during her 16th year of life, and a year of her high school experience. She's basically in the middle of forming her self-identity, so you could say she's in the middle of a never ending crisis period.
Where: The story stays in her small hometown, where everyone knows everyone, and reputations stick to you like glue. She lives with her hippie grandma, promiscuous pot head uncle, in a cute house with one heck of a garden.
Why: This novel is fueled on feelings of loss, love, confusion, and struggling with independence. It follows a lost girl with nearly lost potential, as she tries to make sense of her crumbling life.
I give this book 4 STARS for 5 W's. Though the plot is quite predictable, it has incredibly vibrant characters that you literally have to try not to love, it is full of beautifully written and raw emotion, plus, there's even a little poetry. Who doesn't love poetry? Am I right?
